“With the daily interactions that need to be had with physicians related to their documentation, it is clear that all coding departments should have physician champions or physician advisors to help develop and strengthen the … critical link between coders and physicians,” Lisa Banker, MD recently wrote.

Banker, the corporate vice president and chief physician advisor for McLeod Health system in Florence, S.C. said that the relationship between coders and clinicians is essential indeed, and the dimensions of that relationship will be explored when she serves as a special guest during the next edition of Talk Ten Tuesdays.

Other segments to be featured on the broadcast include:

  • News Desk: Gloryanne Bryant, past president of the California Health Information Association, will anchor the Talk Ten Tuesdays news desk, reporting on the epidemic of copying and pasting progress notes in electronic health records (EHRs).

  • Coding Update: The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) celebrates June as Inpatient Coding Month, and Angie Comfort, senior director of health information management (HIM) practice excellence for AHIMA, will discuss issues facing coders.

  • CDI Report: Glenn Krauss will continue his reporting on clinical documentation integrity (CDI).

  • The Coder Connection: Nationally recognized author and consultant Deborah Grider will report on what she sees as commonalities among coders and clinicians in coding and documenting diagnoses.
