HATA Ends 2014 on a High Note, Looks Forward to More in 2015

The Healthcare Administrative Technology Association (HATA) is off to a tremendous start as a leader and key voice for the healthcare administrative technology industry.

Launched in July 2014, this association provides a forum for members to form a collective representative voice advocating on behalf of an industry that represents nearly 100 percent of all initial claims submitted on behalf of hospitals, physicians, and allied health professionals.   

“Our charter members represent some of the biggest names in administrative technology today,” HATA Executive Director Tim McMullen said. “And because we partner closely with other major stakeholders in the industry, our ability to provide a strong voice on behalf of our members has been significant.”

While the keys to accomplishing administrative simplification are split among many stakeholders in the industry, HATA seeks to ensure that its members are fully engaged in their administrative simplification piece of the pie by providing advocacy, knowledge and education, tools, resources, vendor relationships, and industry collaboration.  

“HATA offers a collaborative forum and unifying voice for practice management system organizations,” CAQH Executive Director Robin Thomashauer said. “This collaboration is essential to solving the problems and achieving the promise of healthcare administrative simplification. Membership in HATA provides education and resources that support individual organizations and brings together collective strength that helps advance the industry as a whole.” 

With just six months of operation, HATA has launched many initiatives that have provided the foundation for the work of the association that will be done in 2015 and beyond. Among these achievements is the fact that HATA members have been chosen to serve on the Practice Management System Accreditation Program (PMSAP) Advisory Committee. This joint accreditation initiative, led by WEDI, MGMA, and EHNAC, is being created to measure the ability of PMS vendors to provide essential tools to optimize workflow and streamline efficiency while also allowing for enhanced RCM and seamless integration with electronic health record systems.

“While we have HATA members that are participating in the testing pilot, all HATA members have the opportunity to participate in the joint recommendations being provided during the PMSAP comment period, which ends Feb. 10, 2015,” McMullen added. 

HATA also held its first national meeting in conjunction with the Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange (WEDI) Fall Conference held in October 2014, when members and other key stakeholders were able to network with peers and hear from key presenters including CMS and CAQH regarding industry challenges. Other sponsored programs included webinars featuring Priscilla Holland from NACHA on healthcare EFT standards and Scott Hewitt from UnitedHealth Group on value-based payments and transitioning from paying for volume to paying for value. 

As 2015 is now upon us, ICD-10 is drawing ever closer. The Healthcare Administrative Technology Association will be at the forefront of ensuring that its members and their clients are prepared to the fullest extent possible. HATA has launched a new formal program that provides a pathway between the practice management system, its clients, and the payor industry to provide a forum ensuring efficient, accurate, and costeffective claims adjudication processes. Through payor outreach, communication, and feedback, HATA is committed to supporting a clean ICD-10 transition.
