The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has confirmed the planned presence of a participating representative for ICD10monitor.com’s roundtable discussion on the American Medical Association’s stance on the ICD-10 coding system, a groundbreaking live broadcast event scheduled to take place today at 10:30 a.m. EST.

Joining the 90-minute roundtable, titled “At the Crossroads: AMA’s Impact on ICD-10,” will be Denise M. Buenning, director of the administrative simplification group at the CMS Office of E-Health Standards and Services (OESS) in Baltimore. Her areas of responsibility include the CMS ICD-10 Program Management Office, HIPAA transaction and code set enforcement, and HIPAA Administrative Simplification. She was honored in 1999 by the CMS Federal Women's Program as one of the agency’s “16 Most Significant Women,” and is a seven-time recipient of the agency’s Administrator's Achievement Award and a two-time recipient of U.S. Department of Health and Senior Services (HHS) secretary’s medallions.

“We are very pleased to have Ms. Buenning as a member of our distinguished panel,” said Chuck Buck, publisher of ICD10monitor.com. “We appreciate the fact that CMS would make her available for this important discussion.”

Moderating the roundtable, which will include a live Q&A segment, will be Buck and MedLearn Vice President of Consulting Kim Charland (BA, RHIT, CCS). Panelists confirmed to appear include Cleveland Clinic Health System Executive Director of Revenue Cycle Management Lyman Sornberger, Kloss Strategic Advisors President and former AHIMA Chief Executive Officer Linda Kloss, IASIS Healthcare Director of Health Information Management Kyle McElroy, Health Care Mediation Co-founder David Block and WellPoint Vice President of ICD-10 Federal Mandates Ian Bonnet.

The AMA’s House of Delegates voted at its Nov. 15 semi-annual meeting to “vigorously” work to stop the implementation of ICD-10. Roundtable panelists will discuss the implications of this decision and its potential impact on the federal government’s mandated transition to ICD-10 by October 2013.

Buenning joined the CMS Kansas City Regional Office in 1998 and is a former newspaper columnist with the Kansas City Times, which later merged with its parent publication, the Kansas City Star. Buenning has held management positions at Sprint Corporation, two Kansas City-area medical centers and a Washington, D.C. industry trade association.
