Three Distinguished Healthcare Professionals Join ICD10monitor Editorial Board

Original story posted on: June 10, 2011

Three distinguished healthcare professionals have accepted invitations to become members of the ICD10monitor.com editorial board.

Joining the board are Brooke Palkie, MA, RHIA, assistant professor for the Department of Healthcare Informatics and Information Management at the College of St. Scholastica (Duluth, Minn.); Patricia Trela, RHIA, director of HIM and rehabilitation services for Diskriter, Inc.; and John Wollman, executive vice president of healthcare for HighPoint Solutions. The announcement was made by Chuck Buck, publisher for ICD10monitor.com.

“We are very pleased and fortunate to have these outstanding healthcare professionals on the editorial board,” Buck said. “The value will come from the articles they will be writing for our growing number of subscribers. Their articles will appear in our bi-weekly e-newsletter.”

Palkie, in her current role as part of the St. Scholastica faculty, is responsible for successfully transitioning the coding and classifications curriculum to ICD-10. Additionally, Brooke is involved with a HRSA grant-funded research effort to implement a rural health technology project focused to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs.

Trela has more than 25 years of healthcare industry experience. She was responsible for the initial startup of HIM departments at three large acute medical rehabilitation hospitals where she designed, developed and implemented policies and processes. She also was part of the 11-member task force that developed the Functional Independence Measure (FIMTM) and the minimum data set for the Uniform Data System for Medical Rehabilitation (UDSMR), an integral part of Medicare’s prospective payment system for inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs).

Wollman is responsible for HighPoint’s healthcare industry group, catering to payers and providers. He is a recognized expert in several healthcare business domains (Reform, HIPAA 5010, ICD-10, Platform Strategy) and technical domains (Master Data Management, Analytics).

The website, www.icd10monitor.com, was launched on April 19, 2011 and provides to healthcare professionals news and information about the nationwide transition healthcare facilities must undertake moving the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) to the 10th Revision (ICD-10-CM) effective October 2013. The conversion represents a major change for America’s healthcare system, as the implementation of ICD-10 will affect all providers, vendors and care settings.
